New Men In Black International Trailer Reveals Tessa Thompson's Origin Story

The Men in Black franchise is coming back, but with a very different look. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are taking over the leads as the organization tasked with managing aliens on earth, and the new trailer for the film finally gives us a bit more backstory on Tessa Thompson's rookie Agent M. Check out the new trailer below.

We've seen in previous trailers that Tessa Thompson's character gets her job with the Men in Black after successfully tracking them down herself, but it turns out the reason she knows about them at all is because she had a minor run in with them years before. It seems her parents had their memories wiped by the MiB, but they didn't know the young girl was watching. She's now spent her life trying to find the group, and finally has.

Apparently the Men in Black agree that discovering them is an acceptable method of job application and she gets the job. As we've seen, she gets paired with Chris Hemsworth's Agent H, a guy who is about from Tommy Lee Jones' mentor character from the original set of films as it is possible to get.

We also get new plot details in the form of the film's villain, called The Hive, which appears to be a group of aliens that are capable of making themselves look like anything. At one point we see our heroes going up against what looks like a bunch of fellow MiB agents, but are apparently aliens.

Of course, what's most memorable about the Men in Black films is really the creative alien designs, and also the gadgets and guns, and the new trailer for Men in Black International has plenty of all of that. We see lots of interesting looking aliens, even if we only see them briefly, wandering around the Men in Black home base. Several more humorous creatures are wandering around the world outside.

The most interesting alien, who appears to be a significant character in the film, is a little green man voiced by Kumail Nanjiani. He pledges his eternal devotion to Agent M, which apparently means he doesn't leave her side, as we see him standing on her shoulder later in the trailer.

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are a glorious pair and they proved that they have great chemistry in Thor: Ragnarok. What's unclear from these trailers is if Men in Black International is going to have anything other than the chemistry of its two leads going on. There's just not a lot else to judge here. There's some funny bits. I particularly like the part where Tessa Thompson wants to drive the car but gets in on the wrong side.

However, a few good jokes won't be enough to save the movie if that's literally all there is. We'll get to see for ourselves when Men in Black International arrives in theaters June 14.

Jordan Peele's movies have a lot that set them apart from the pack, but one of the most obvious is the fact that, in the cases of both Get Out and Us, the lead characters were African-American. In a Hollywood that is still largely focused on white men, Peele's movies are an anomaly, but the director doesn't expect that he'll ever make a movie with a lead actor that looks like so many other lead actors, for the simple reason that it happens so frequently. According to Peele...

I don’t see myself casting a white dude as the lead in my movie. Not that I don’t like white dudes. But I've seen that movie.

While Hollywood diversity is always improving, the vast majority of films still star white dudes. Beyond the simple benefits of diversity, the fact is that Jordan Peele's movies standout because they aren't simply another movie about a white guy. The relationship between black people and the horror genre specifically is such that it is often the subject of jokes. Peele's interest in making horror films with black actors means that he gets to battle these tropes and give the entire genre a new look.

And for Peele, it isn't that he simply likes to cast black people. In Get Out especially, the fact that the main character is black is a key part of the story. It simply doesn't work any other way.

And if you're worried, the position of white people in Jordan Peele's movies is improving. In Get Out they were evil, but in Us, they're not the bad guys, they're just assholes.

At the same time, the writer/director told a group of students at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (via THR) that he also wants to cast black people in his films because he's in a unique position to be able to do so...

The way I look at it, I get to cast black people in my movies. I feel fortunate to be in this position where I can say to Universal, 'I want to make a $20 million horror movie with a black family.' And they say yes."

For a director who has only made two movies, Jordan Peele has had an incredible amount of success. His first movie won him an Academy Award for writing and his second movie is now the hottest thing at the box office. The fact is that other filmmakers could potentially have trouble casting minorities in major roles in movies because there's frequently a feeling that can limit a movie's appeal, but nobody is going to tell Jordan Peele no at this point. One hopes that Peele's success will help open the door to others, as he is helping to shatter those Hollywood casting myths.

To be fair, Jordan Peele simply says he doesn't see himself casting a white actor in a lead role because he's seen the movie before. If he came up with a way to do it that we hadn't seen before it could happen. Still, Peele's movies are terrifying and provocative just the way he makes them, so I'm certainly not hoping for a major shift any time soon.

Kevin Feige Confirms An Incredible Hulk And Spider-Man Connection

If a franchise is around long enough, then the greater the chances are you’ll have an actor return to play a different character. Just look at all the actors the Law & Order shows have reused over the years. However, every now and then there’s an opportunity to have the characters played by such an actorconnect to one another or even become the same character. Now it’s been confirmed that the latter is the case with Martin Starr in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Martin Starr first cameoed as a college student in The Incredible Hulk, credited simply as “Computer Nerd,” who Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner gives pizza to in order to access the Culver University computer lab. Nine years later, Starr returned to the MCU as Roger Harrington, a science teacher and head of the Academic Decathlon Team at Peter Parker’s school in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was asked if we can assume if Martin Starr’s The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man: Homecoming characters are the same people. Feige responded:

I do.

There you have it. If the head honcho at Marvel Studios consider Martin Starr to be playing the same individual in the MCU, then we can take that as a fact. When he briefly crossed paths with Bruce Banner, Roger Harrington was still going through higher education, but eventually he found a teaching position at the Midtown School of Science and Technology, where his life would intersect with another superhero.

It’s worth noting that in The Incredible Hulk novelization, Martin Starr’s character is named Amadeus Cho, who in the Marvel comics universe is a young Asian American man who is one of the smartest people on the planet and succeeded Bruce Banner as The Hulk in recent years. Obviously that portion of the novelization has been rendered non-canon, paving the way for a more faithful version of Amadeus to be introduced down the line. After all, we already met Amadeus’ mother, Helen, in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While Roger Harrington’s participation in The Incredible Hulk was simply reacting with gratitude that Bruce Banner gave him pizza (there was a scene where he had dialogue, but it was cut), he had a more substantial role looking after his students in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He was on the elevator in the Washington Monument with some of the teens when the Chitauri energy core detonated, but fortunately Spider-Man saved him and the others before they fell to their deaths.

Martin Starr is reprising Roger Harrington this summer for Spider-Man: Far From Home, as Roger is one of the teachers chaperoning the trip to Europe. So naturally he’ll get caught up in Spider-Man’s latest adventure, but it remains to be seen if he’ll ever interact with Bruce Banner again. That would be quite a reunion, especially considering how Bruce is looking nowadays.

New Mutants: What We Know So Far

The X-Men franchise is seriously expanding. It's true that we will no longer see any more Wolverine movies, but thanks to the success of Deadpool, 20th Century Fox has started developing big plans for the future of its flagship comic book series. A huge part of this equation is the New Mutants film that has been in development for a couple of years, and now that project is less than a year away from release. But what exactly is New Mutants? The answer to that question is what we're here to provide.

As we do with all major upcoming releases, the following What We Know So Far guide has been constructed as a means of collecting all of the information that is currently available about the New Mutants movie. When is it coming out? Who is directing it? Who are the main characters? We address all of those queries and more below, so read on... but first, give the teaser trailer a watch!

What Is The New Mutants Release Date?

While 2017 marked the first year that Marvel Studios had three comic book movies in theaters, 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise was trying not to lag too far behind. The studio announced plans to have their own trio of blockbusters in 2018 -- with the first on the docket being New Mutants, which had a release date of April 13, 2018. Unfortunately, two big scheduling changes in early 2018 lead to New Mutants getting pushing back twice by the studio by the time early April rolled around. First, the film was pushed to February 22, 2019. Then, a couple of months later, the horror-themed superhero film was delayed again, this time until August 2019. The 1990s-set X-Men: Dark Phoenix was also moved into 2019, meaning that the only X-movie fans will see in 2018 will be David Leitch's Deadpool 2.

While an August debut might seem a bit late to capture the attention of comic book movie fans, let's remember that Guardians of the Galaxy hits screens on August 1, 2014, and matching the success of that film would certainly be considered a big win for The New Mutants.

What Is The New Mutants Rating?

Unlike the other major comic book movie franchises, the X-Men titles are the first to really experiment when it comes to exploration of different ratings. Most of these films stick to PG-13 as a way of ensuring that teenage fans can buy tickets, but both Deadpool and Logan have proven that there is a whole lot of money to be made making these titles strictly for adults. Because of these successes, it's entirely suspected that 20th Century Fox will continue making R-rated superhero flicks for many years to come... but it doesn't look like The New Mutants will be one of them.

The MPAA doesn't actually hand down a movie's rating until the nearly-completed product is getting ready to arrive in theaters, but there hasn't been any indication that The New Mutants will be aiming for a restricted label. As we will get into later in this article, the film is expected to feature a few shocks and scares, but signs have been pointing to this blockbuster getting made with audiences 13 and older in mind.

Who Is The New Mutants Director?

Looking at the past work of director Josh Boone, you might not necessarily pin him as the director of the next great superhero blockbuster. After all, he made his directorial debut in 2012 with the romantic comedy Stuck In Love, and primarily found himself garnering a lot of attention for his 2014 hit cancer drama The Fault In Our Stars. It turns out, however, that Boone is actually a big-time comic book fan, and utilized that passion to land the New Mutants directing gig.

Josh Boone first became attached to the X-Men blockbuster when it was first announced back in May of 2015, and has been working towards getting it made ever since (with only his plans to adapt Stephen King's The Stand serving as a distraction). Now, however, he has cleared his schedule, and is using 2017 as his year to bring The New Mutants to life on the big screen.

Danielle Moonstar a.k.a. Mirage

It was revealed in November 2016 that the New Mutants movie would adapt one of the comic series' most notable arcs, The Demon Bear -- and from this we can glean that Danielle Moonstar will be the central character in the upcoming film. And while we don't yet know who will be playing the mutant heroine in Josh Boone's blockbuster, we can get a solid idea of what to expect from the movie in general by exploring Moonstar's role in the story.

Danielle Moonstar is a Native American mutant with a number of impressive mental powers -- including telepathy and psionic abilities -- but they manifested in a rather horrific way when she was a young girl. Specifically, she caught a psychic glimpse of her parents being killed by a demonic bear -- and then a few weeks later both her mom and dad disappeared. She was taken in by her magically-inclined grandfather, Black Eagle, and while she continued to have nightmares about the Demon Bear, they were kept at bay thanks to Black Eagle's spells.

These horrific dreams return to Moonstar during her tenure as a member of the New Mutants team, but rather than repressing them, she prepares to take on the evil ursine. Unfortunately for her, this horrific entity proves to be far more than she can face by herself, and she turns to her teammates to assist her in her battle.

It was only just about a week before the start of production on New Mutants that the film cast its star to play Danielle Moonstar, but at least they got it done under the wire. In early July 2017, it was reported that the comic book movie blockbuster had hired newcomer Blu Hunt to take on the key role in the 2018 flick. The film will actually be her big screen debut, though she does have some notable experience in that she plays a recurring role on the CW series The Originals.

Rahne Sinclair a.k.a. Wolfsbane

Thanks to Mystique and Beast in previous X-Men movies, fans have seen plenty of mutants who have the ability to physically transform on the big screen... but Wolfsbane's particular power is a tad more traditional than what we've seen. After all, she is basically a mutant lycanthrope -- able to either turn herself into a human/wolf hybrid or go full wolf-mode.

Like most of the New Mutants team, Wolfsbane a.k.a. Rahne Sinclair was created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, and her backstory involves a strictly religious upbringing in Scotland that was followed by horrific persecution. She was nearly burned at the stake, but was rescued and eventually adopted by Moira MacTaggert (who was played by Rose Byrne in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Apocalypse). Sadly, at this stage we don't know how much of this narrative will find its way into the New Mutants movie.

What we do know, however, is the identity of the actress who will be playing the first live-action version of Wolfsbane. It was reported all the way back in April 2016 that Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams was being considered for the part, and Josh Boone basically confirmed the casting himself in February 2017 by posting concept art of a part-wolf Williams. Considering that the writer/director has been discussing the horror elements of the movie he wants to make, hopefully we can expect some very cool transformation sequences.

Illyana Rasputin a.k.a. Magik

Actress Anya Taylor-Joy caught a lot of people's attention extremely fast thanks to her fantastic performance in the 2015 indie horror movie The Witch, and her star has only been rising ever since. She played the lead role in M. Night Shyamalan's 2017 hit Split -- and now she is confirmed to be a part of her second superhero franchise. It has been confirmed that Taylor-Joy will be playing Magik a.k.a. Illyana Rasputin in Josh Boone's New Mutants.

If that last name looks familiar (beyond the notorious Russian mystic), it's because Magik is actually the younger sister of Piotr Rasputin a.k.a. the metal-covered mutant Colossus. They grew up together in Russia, though Illyana was kidnapped and brought to the United States when she was only six years old. It was after her rescue that she was first brought to the X-Mansion - though she spent most of her adolescence in the Limbo dimension being trained in the ways of magic and combat.

It was after leaving the Limbo dimension that she returned to Earth and joined the New Mutants (she was 10 years older than when she left, but no time had passed since her departure). In addition to her learned skills, her mutant power allows her to teleport -- though what sets her apart from, say, Nightcrawler, is that she can teleport through both space and time, both future and past. It's not a power that's easily controlled, and significant screw-ups have occurred -- but that should just make for great story fodder in the New Mutants movie.

Bobby da Costa a.k.a. Sunspot

Most of the characters who will make up the titular team in The New Mutants will be making their live-action debut -- but Sunspot is the exception. Director Bryan Singer enlisted actor Adan Canto to play the part in X-Men: Days of Future Past, using him as one of last surviving mutants in a future that has been destroyed by the Sentinels. Of course, the timeline shift that occurred at the end of that movie means that he's technically not part of the canon anymore, which opens up the possibility to use him in Josh Boone's New Mutants.

Hailing from Brazil, Sunspot a.k.a. Roberto "Bobby" da Costa has the mutant ability to soak in solar power and redirect it. While he ordinarily looks like a normal person, when he is in his energized state his entire body turns into a non-reflective black color, allowing him to most efficiently absorb the sun's energy. Actor Henry Zaga, who recently earned attention for his part in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, will be playing the part in The New Mutants, and the project will be his biggest to date. We're excited to see what he does with it.

Sam Guthrie a.k.a. Cannonball

As far as adapting mutant powers for the big screen, the introduction of Cannonball in New Mutants should be quite interesting. In the most basic terms, he has the power to fly at super speeds -- but what makes that possible is that he can release thermo-chemical energy from his skin, and basically turn the lower half of his body into a jet propulsion system. Because of this, he can fly around incredibly fast, create blast fields, and really just kick all kinds of ass.

So who will be playing the southern-fried, Kentucky-born mutant in New Mutants? For a long time it was suggested that the role could go to Nat Wolff, who previously worked with Josh Boone on The Fault in Our Stars, but that rumor hit the wastebasket in May 2017. Instead, it looks like Cannonball a.k.a. Sam Guthrie will be played by Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton. Can he pull off the accent? We'll find out soon enough!

Dr. Cecilia Reyes

Initially it was expected that Rosario Dawson would be playing the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes in The New Mutants - the actress previously having a close relationship with comic book material through projects like the Marvel Netflix shows and the animated Wonder Woman movie. Scheduling conflicts forced her to drop out, however, leaving the production with a casting gap to fill. Fortunately, they landed on the talented Alice Braga to play the part.

As you would expect, Dr. Cecilia Reyes is a mutant herself, in addition to being a doctor, and was introduced to Marvel Comics in 1997. Her special ability is the creation of psioplasmic bio-fields... which basically means that she can generate an incredibly strong energy barrier around herself that can protect her from outside attack. It's worth noting that she doesn't really have a big connection with the New Mutants in the source material, but this would hardly be the first time details were fudged in an adaptation. Based on the trailer, it looks like she will be the primary caretaker for the titular characters as they adjust to their dangerous abilities.

James McAvoy Would Play The Riddler For DC

It's no secret that superhero movies are everywhere. The comic book genre has proved the most profitable and popular genre in the industry, so plenty of studios and filmmakers are trying to get in on the fun. With multiple cinematic universes battling for box office supremacy, a ton of talented actors have adapted iconic characters from the page to the screen. In fact, actors like Josh Brolin, Peter Dinklage, Chris Evans, and Ryan Reynolds have played multiple comic book characters in their careers.

James McAvoy has put in the hours himself, playing Professor X for the last four X-Men movies. But with that franchise's future unclear in the wake of the Disney and Fox merger, the time might come for him to hop onto another comic book franchise. When asked who he might like to play on the DC side of things, he recently revealed he was interesting in Batman's Edward Nygma aka The Riddler. McAvoy said:

The Riddler, maybe. Always liked him when I was growing up. I’ve always thought DC does really good bad guys.

Do you hear that noise? It's the sound of countless comic book fans cheering in joy. The Riddler hasn't been on the big screen since 1995's Batman Forever, as Jim Carrey played the character with ample supplies of campy energy-- fitting perfectly in with Joel Schumacher's vision for the franchise.

James McAvoy's comments come from his recent Instagram Live video, which was captured and immortalized on Twitter. While he didn't broach the subject of a DC role by himself, he did reveal which character he would like to inhabit, if given the choice. That was none other than the genius Batman villain The Riddler. He also acknowledged that DC knows what it's doing in regards to villains.

Now might be the perfect time to bring The Riddler to the DCEU, as Gotham City looks like it'll become a more important setting in the shared universe. Birds Of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will feature plenty of Gotham City denizens, and Matt Reeves is also developing his movie, The Batman. The latter will reportedly feature Batman's rogues gallery, so could that include The Riddler?

The Riddler hasn't been seen on the big screen since back Jim Carrey portrayed him in Batman Forever. Joel Schumacher took over the Batman franchise from Tim Burton, and made it more colorful and kid friendly. As such, Carrey primarily flexed his comedic muscles for his version of Edward Nygma, sharing an over the top dynamic with Tommy Lee Jones' Two-Face.

On the small screen, The Riddler is a major character in The CW's Gotham. Played by Cory Michael Smith, fans tuned in every week to see him go from GCPD employee to super villain, as well as his complicated relationship with The Penguin. But with Gotham coming to a close this season, the timing also works out to possibly bring a new version of the character to audiences.

How Robert Downey Jr. And Jeremy Renner Feel About Crazy Endgame Theories

It's an extremely exciting time for Marvel fans out there. Because in a matter of days, Avengers: Endgame will finally arrive in theaters, and continue the narrative that The Russo Brothers started with Infinity War. Given the horrifying twist ending of the last film, moviegoers are eager for any and all information regarding Endgame's contents.

In the year-long wait between Avengers flicks, the fandom was left to its own devices, void of any information about what comes next. As such, plenty of wild fan theories have hit the internet, with varying levels of believability. And the theories seem to tickle the actors pink, especially Jeremy Renner and Robert Downey Jr. The OG Avengers recently opened up about fan theories at a press conference, with Renner saying:

I just love the creativity that comes from theories.They’re hilarious, they’re pretty crazy… but it means people are invested in the stories.

During his long tenure in the MCU, Jeremy Renner has likely heard a variety of crazy theories. But the Mission: Impossible alum seems to enjoy the creativity that cinephiles need in order to craft such complicated narratives. And he loves how much the fans are into the Avengers franchise.

Jeremy Renner saw firsthand how much the fandom loves his Marvel character when Hawkeye was noticeably absent during Avengers: Infinity War. As soon as the posters dropped, it became clear that the bowman was going to be left out, leading to some fan backlash ahead of Infinity War's release. But Hawkeye/ Ronin is heavily featured in Endgame's trailers, so justice will be served in a matter of days.

In the same Endgame press conferences in Seoul (via CNA Lifestyle), Robert Downey Jr. echoed Jeremy Renner's statements. But he explicitly mentioned one fan theory that's been viral over the past few weeks: that Ant-Man will kill Thanos by shrinking, entering his big purple butt, and then growing to rip him apart from the inside. It's already been addressed by Josh Brolin and Paul Rudd, and now Tony Stark himself has chimed, saying:

My favorite [fan theory] is Ant-Man goes up Thanos’ butt and then makes himself big. And that’s exactly what happens.

Just like his Marvel character, Robert Downey Jr. loves to crack a joke, and bring some sarcasm to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And when it comes to The Mad Titan finally being killed via his big purple butt, RDJ just couldn't pass up the opportunity. And really, who can blame him?

As far as fan theories go, there have been a ton regarding the mysterious contents of Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios has been keeping its cards close to the chest for the past year, allowing room for Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel to have their time to shine in theaters. Endgame's trailers have been purposefully vague and skimpy with footage, so audiences should be able to go into theaters fresh, and see if any fan theories come to fruition.

See What Anthony Mackie Could Look Like As Captain America

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame

It's almost hard to believe, but Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for nearly a month. The Russo Brothers crafted a complicated narrative, and the blockbuster's runtime was jam packed with plot twits, cameos, and satisfying conclusions. This was especially true when it came to Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson.

After the Avengers defeated Thanos forever, Captain America traveled back in time to return the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir to their proper place in the multiverse. He returned as an old man, having lived a full life in the past with Peggy Carter. Steve Rogers also gave Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) his shield, passing on the mantle of Captain America. Check out what Mackie might look like as the Cap below.

Does anyone else have chills? Sam Wilson has had a strong tenure in the MCU starting in Phase Two, and he's expected to take the spotlight in the shared universe's mysterious future.

This awesome image comes to us from Instagram user Jakub Maslowski, who regularly posts renderings of Marvel's finest heroes. The art shows Sam Wilson in full Captain America regalia, complete with the Vibranium shield. But he's also got some of Falcon's regular gear, including his iconic goggles and (most importantly) those wings.

Sam Wilson is obviously a great choice to take on the role of Captain America, but it should be interesting to see how Marvel Studios ultimately handles this transition-- especially related to the character's fighting style. Falcon has always relied heavily on his high-tech wings, which give him flight and an array of weapons. But once he becomes the new Captain, will he ditch the wings?

This new image, also from Instagram, is a bit more simple. Rather than crafting any new imagery, the artist simply used previous images of Falcon and Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier to get an idea of what Sam Wilson's character might look like under a different identity.

One of the unexpected character pairings to come out of Phase Three has been Bucky and Sam Wilson. They both operate primarily under the Captain America franchise, and are deeply connected to Chris Evans' Steve Rogers. The two supporting characters really hit it off in Captain America: Civil War, and it was a dynamic that also hit with audiences.

Sam and Bucky were given some more choice moments in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, with the two included the film's final sequence. It's a relationship that is expected to be explored in the MCU's future, especially their Disney+ series Falcon & Winter Soldier. It's also expected that Anthony Mackie will lead the Captain America franchise in Phase Four, hopefully with Sebastian Stan's Bucky in tow.
