The Star Wars Franchise Will Take A Hiatus After Episode IX, According To Bob Iger

The Star Wars Franchise Will Take A Hiatus After Episode IX, According To Bob Iger
Rey with Lightsaber in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

While fans are speculating what Star Wars Episode IX will have in store for fans to end the trilogiy, the second biggest question of the galaxy, far, far away, is what happens next. We were always told that we should be expecting one Star Wars movie a year going forward, but nothing had been officially announced by Lucasfilm for 2020 or beyond. Now, Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed what many had been speculating, the Star Wars franchise will be taking a bit of a break from the big screen.

Following Disney's big announcement regarding Disney+, Bob Iger sat down with Bloomberg and revealed that the plan is for Star Wars to take a break after Episode IX. While there certainly will be new Star Wars movies, they won't be coming immediately. According to Iger...

We will take a pause, some time, and reset. Because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Star Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus.

We know that there are several Star Wars projects in development. There's a trilogy by Rian Johnson as well as films being worked on by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. However, we have no idea when we'll see any of these films. It sounds like Disney is in no hurry to make any of them happen.

Instead, it seems like the plan is for Star Wars to shift off the big screen, and take up the small screen instead. Disney confirmed that The Mandalorian will be a day one release when Disney+ launches in November, and so it sounds like the plan is for that series to be the next chapter of Star Wars.

Bob Iger had previously fallen on his sword and taken the blame for moving too quickly with Star Wars and had said the franchise would slow down in some way. Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story released within six months of each other and the latter film did not do traditional Star Wars numbers at the box office. Some wondered if Star Wars was moving too quickly and Iger seemed to agree that was the case. It seems this is that slow down that Iger was talking about. The brand as a whole isn't going to disappear, but the big screen efforts will take a break.

Bob Iger didn't give any indication of how long this hiatus would be, so we don't know know if the franchise is just going to take 2020 off and be back in 2021, or if it will be even longer before we see another big screen Star Wars movie. With two Star Wars series coming to Disney+, and other potential series being rumored that could come after, it's possible we could see the franchise out of theaters for a while as Disney tries to make sure Star Wars fans are on board the new streaming service.

If one were being cynical, one might think that the reason Star Wars will take a big screen break isn't because it needs to rest and reset, but because Disney wants people looking for more Star Wars to subscribe to Disney+. If one were being cynical.

Dan Aykroyd Teases The New Ghostbusters Will Be ‘Quite Scary’

Dan Aykroyd Teases The New Ghostbusters Will Be ‘Quite Scary’
Dan Aykroyd in the original Ghostbusters

It’s a famous line from the original Ghostbusters theme song. “I ain’t afraid of no ghost.” Because the ghosts in Ghostbusters, both the original and it sequel, were never meant to be scary. The guys were making comedies that happened to involve the supernatural, not horror thrillers with a few jokes mixed in. But with a new Ghostbusters story potentially coming to theaters, chills and scares may be on the menu.

Dan Aykroyd, an OG Ghostbuster, was out promoting his vodka and answering Ghostbusters questions for The Canadian Press (via 660citynews.com). When asked about the script that Jason Reitman has produced for a possible Ghostbusters sequel, Aykroyd opened up a little and explained:

Ivan Reitman’s son Jason has written a beautiful script, I can’t say too much about it but it’s going to get made and hopefully there’ll be some familiar faces. … It’s so different from even the first and second [movies]. This just takes it to a new generation and a new direction that is so warm, heartfelt and, indeed, quite scary when you confront some of the issues that are being discussed.

The “quite scary” nod got us excited, because that would be a new direction for the franchise, and also for Jason Reitman as a director. Yes, he’s the son of the original director, Ivan Reitman. But nothing on Jason’s resume suggests that he’d be willing to tackle horror – though that doesn’t mean that he’s not ready to give it a try.

Also, with the reported casting of both Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon, the new movie might be leaning into a Stranger Things vibe, which taps into nostalgia by embracing ‘80s culture, but isn’t afraid to turn up the thrills when the story calls for it.

That first tease that Reitman filmed for this new Ghostbusters certainly set that mood:

But we don’t know a whole lot of details beyond that teaser, as the movie hasn’t yet gone into production. It is believed that the original stars Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson will return for this new movie, but we don’t know how they will be used in the story.

If Dan Aykroyd gets his way, however, the new movie will be the start of several new Ghostbusters stories, as he goes on to say in the interview:

I’ve written Ghostbusters High, where they meet in New Jersey in 1969 and we’re looking to do that as probably a glorified feature or pilot within the next maybe five years…. And it would lead to a television project and I thought of him immediately for that. It’s on his desk but that’s years away from the current project. But it’s a neat idea for a prequel. Imagine casting the three characters as teenagers! … We have other stuff after the Jason Reitman-helmed movie. We have at least one or two other concepts for the Ghostbusters and then we’ll look at doing the prequel, which will be a perfect button on all we’ve done up to that point.

Of course, those plans stop if the new movie can’t get the franchise back off of the ground. If the Paul Feig movie caught fire, the franchise could have continued in that direction. But for now, we are sitting back and anticipating a new Ghostbusters movie from Jason Reitman on July 10, 2020. Will you check it out?

Stephen King’s 'Salem’s Lot Is Finally Being Made Into A Movie, And James Wan’s Involved

Stephen King’s 'Salem’s Lot Is Finally Being Made Into A Movie, And James Wan’s Involved
Salem's Lot TV movie

The work of Stephen King is as hot a property now as it has ever been. In just the last couple years we've seen adaptations of IT, The Dark Tower, and a remake of Pet Sematary. Now, one of the author's earliest works 'Salem's Lot is set for its first big screen adaptation and modern horror master James Wan is on board the project.

James Wan is set to act as a producer of the new 'Salem's Lot while Gary Dauberman, the writer of several installments of Wan's Conjuring franchise, as well as the recent Stephen King adaptation of IT, and the upcoming IT: Chapter 2, will pen the script. According to THR, the film is currently without a director, though Wan could certainly fill that void if his schedule permits, and Dauberman's directorial debut, Annabelle Comes Home, is about to bow, so he could take the chair as well, especially if that movie is well received.

'Salem's Lot was Stephen King's second published novel after Carrie and it's essentially King's version of Dracula. It follows an author (go fig) who returns to the small Maine town he lived in as a boy, Jerusalem's Lot, shortened by the residents to 'Salem's Lot, only to discover that the residents are turning into vampires. These new vampires have a source of course, which the author, named Ben Mears, finds himself at odds with.

The book has never been adapted as a theatrical feature before, though it has twice been made for television. First, in 1979 as two-part miniseries, then again as TV movie starring Rob Lowe in 2004.

While Stephen King is a go to source for theatrical inspiration these days, the results have certainly been mixed. IT was a massive hit, that much is true. However, the recent Pet Sematary remake has had a lukewarm reaction by both audiences and critics. The less said about The Dark Tower the better.

Having said that, this 'Salem's Lot adaptation is certainly starting out on the right foot. You can't new much better in the horror genre right now than James Wan. While he's still riding high on the success of Aquaman, horror is Wan's home and he clearly still loves it. While Wan has a number of projects in the pipeline as a producer, he hasn't signed on to his next directing job yet, so it's certainly possible this could be it.

The book is also one of Stephen King's personal favorites of his own work, so you can be sure he'll be watching this project closely.

This is certainly a lovely time to be a movie fan if you're also a Stephen King fan. Hopefully, with this strong pedigree behind 'Salem's Lot, this one will turn out a lot more like IT and less like The Dark Tower.

What's Happening With Every Marvel Hero After Avengers: Endgame

What's Happening With Every Marvel Hero After Avengers: Endgame
Avengers Endgame poster

For Marvel fans, Avengers: Endgame marks the culmination of an era. It all started back in 2008 with Iron Man and a crazy amount of franchise-building ambition, and 11 years and 22 films later we’ve come to the conclusion of what has been dubbed the Infinity Saga. We’ve seen a lot happen in that time, and lots of characters come and go, and it’s entirely reasonable to say that the movies have effectively changed modern pop culture.

Of course, just because the Infinity Saga is over doesn’t mean that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is – and there’s a lot to digest now that we are preparing for the start of Phase 4 (which will follow the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home). Not only have we seen some important arcs come to an end, but we are also seeing some that are just beginning. It’s a complex web, which is why we’ve built this feature to help sort it all out.

On the hero side of things, there are 33 characters who find themselves in interesting places following the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, and we’ve built this piece specifically to analyze where they all currently stand. Obviously that’s a lot to dig into, so let’s dive in…

Iron Man

It goes without saying that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wouldn’t be what it is today without Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man, but now his time on the big screen has come to an end. While he used to be a selfish asshole, he changed a lot over the course of nine movies, and he made the biggest sacrifice of all in Avengers: Endgame – losing his life after using the Nano Gauntlet to defeat Thanos and his army. We may never see Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony on the big screen again (and if we do it will be years and years from now), but there’s no doubt that he will live on through the memories of his fellow heroes.

Captain America

On the opposite end of the spectrum from Iron Man, Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America began his journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by sacrificing his life – purposefully crashing an aircraft full of explosives into the arctic – but following the events of Avengers: Endgame he managed to actually get his life back. The Avengers thought they were sending their leader on a quick trip back through time to return the Infinity Stones back to their proper places, but he instead decided to stay and live out a full life with his number one gal, Peggy Carter, in the wake of World War II. Steve is now an old man, his superhero days behind him, though that doesn’t mean that the world doesn’t have a Captain America (more on that later).

Thor

Thor’s journey has been quite rough in the last few years, what with losing his mother, his father, his brother, his best friend, his homeworld, half of the Asgardian population, his hammer, his eye, and more. But Avengers: Endgame surprisingly didn’t present him with an end to his journey; instead, he is ready for a new beginning. Previously he was a character with all of his loyalties wrapped up in the fate of Asgard, but he has now given up his crown and is ready to start a brand new life. He began a friendly relationship with the Guardians of the Galaxy during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, and now it looks like he’ll be joining that crew, but exactly what he’ll get up to in the future remains a big question mark waiting for confirmation.

Hulk

As teased by Mark Ruffalo a few years ago, Hulk has been on his own specific journey through the events of Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, and that journey has left him in a very interesting place going forward. While Bruce Banner used to be a man completely terrified of the monster living inside him, the two have now made peace, and Hulk and Banner are now one – commonly referred to by fans as Professor Hulk. It doesn’t seem like this status is going to change any time soon, though it’s worth noting that the events of Endgame did see him incur what’s been referred to as “permanent damage.” He’s still the strongest Avenger, but his right arm will apparently never be the same.

Black Widow

Avengers: Endgame didn’t feature the massive death toll that some fans were expecting, but there definitely were some key lives lost. We already discussed the passing of Tony Stark, but Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow also gave her life so that the Avengers could succeed in their mission to defeat Thanos and return the world to some semblance of normalcy. Within the continuity, Black Widow died back in 2014, falling from a cliff on Vormir so that Hawkeye could retrieve the Soul Stone. This sacrifice definitely isn’t going to be reversed any time soon, but unlike the situation with Robert Downey Jr., fans will be able to see Scarlet Johansson return to the character soon in the character’s upcoming solo film (which will obviously take place in the past).

Hawkeye

Clint Barton a.k.a. Hawkeye experienced some rough years following The Decimation, becoming the vigilante known as Ronin and traveling around the world killing people, but he got a chance for some redemption at the end of Avengers: Endgame by helping the team get the Nano Gauntlet where it needed to be so that Thanos could be defeated. That being said, his superhero days seem to be over… though he apparently won’t be leaving his post without training someone to take his place. While it has yet to be confirmed, reports have said that Jeremy Renner will soon be playing the character once again in his very own Disney+ series, which will be an adaptation of Matt Fraction and David Aja’s beloved comic book run with the character and have him advising up-and-comer Kate Bishop.

War Machine

James Rhodes has been flying around in the War Machine suit ever since Iron Man 2, and while he’s experienced some pretty devastating personal setbacks (most notably being paralyzed from the waist down during the events of Captain America: Civil War) he has continued to fight the good fight. That being said, following Avengers: Endgame it’s not entirely clear where he stands. He’s obviously still alive, but he also lost his best friend – who also happened to be the person to inspire him to suit up in the first place. Don Cheadle’s future with Marvel Studios is not entirely clear at present, and he doesn’t have any confirmed upcoming projects, but the door is wide open for him to appear in future films or television shows.

Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch missed out on five years of her life after being turned to dust by Thanos’ snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but in Avengers: Endgame she not only returned, but is perhaps now stronger than she’s ever been. She’s still in mourning because of the death of her love (we’ll get more into that in a second), but that emotional pain may take her to some interesting places. She is confirmed to next appear in the Disney+ series WandaVision, and there are rumors that the show may be partially inspired by the House of M storyline from the comics, which saw the hero exhibiting powers more extreme than we’ve seen thus far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Vision

Thanos left many bodies in his wake during his attempt to capture all six of the Infinity Stones, and while many characters returned to life following Hulk’s snap with the Nano Gauntlet, Vision wasn’t one of them. There was an attempt made by Shuri in Avengers: Infinity War to rewire the android so that he could exist without the Mind Stone, but that attempt proved unsuccessful, and he was killed by the Mad Titan when the stone was plucked from his head. Like Scarlet Witch, the character will be back in action for the Disney+ series WandaVision, but exactly how his resurrection will go down remains one of the most significant mysteries in the on-going franchise.

Falcon

There has been speculation for a long time regarding the possibility of Sam Wilson a.k.a. Falcon taking on the mantle of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – specifically ever since that actually happened in Marvel Comics in 2015 – and now that concept has become a reality. Steve Rogers gives Sam his shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame, and it’s a passing of the torch that we expect will affect the franchise for many years to come. Like many of the other characters mentioned on this list so far, the first place where we will be seeing the aftershocks will be on Disney+, as the character has been confirmed to star in the developing Falcon & Winter Soldier (potential title change pending). Speaking of which…

Winter Soldier

To borrow a quote from Black Widow in The Avengers, Bucky Barnes a.k.a. The Winter Soldier a.k.a. White Wolf still has quite a bit of red in his ledger, as it’s doubtful that he will ever be fully recovered from his dark history as a brainwashed Hydra assassin. That being said, he’s still trying to ultimately leave a positive mark on the world, and as noted above he will continue to operate as a heroic vigilante opposite Captain America in the upcoming Disney+ series Falcon & Winter Soldier. Of course, as shown in Captain America: Civil War, the two heroes don’t exactly have the best relationship ever, so it should be a show filled with funny conflict in addition to real danger.

Spider-Man

A huge thing that made the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man distinct from all previous big screen iterations of the character was his relationship with Tony Stark – but obviously that’s changing in a major way following Avengers: Endgame. Peter’s mentor has died, and while he still has access to the Stark Industries-designed technology that he was given, the loss is most definitely going to have an emotional effect on him (as seen in the most recent trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home). The good news, one could argue, is that the rest of his life should be at least somewhat normal, as it would appear that most of his close friends also turned to dust during The Decimation, meaning that he’s not five years behind his classmates.

Ant-Man

Scott Lang a.k.a. Ant-Man was dealt one of the most significant emotional blows in Avengers: Endgame, given that he was trapped in the Quantum Realm for five years – though not from his perspective – and missed out on some key time in the life of his young daughter, Cassie (a situation only made worse when you think about how much of her life he missed when he was in prison). Fortunately he’s left alive and healthy at the end of the film with his girl and his girlfriend/partner, and one can imagine him not taking a single second of his life for granted going forward. Right now we don’t specifically know what the future holds for the character, but it’s all but guaranteed that he will get another opportunity to shine in a trilogy capper for his big screen solo features.

The Wasp

Of course, the “girlfriend/partner” I’m referring to in the Ant-Man section above is Hope van Dyne a.k.a. The Wasp, who is one of the many characters who returns to life in Avengers: Endgame following the first Nano Gauntlet snap. She winds up having a significant role to play in the battle at the end of the film, but beyond those events she also has an interesting future in store given that she will surely feel even more passionately about spending time with her once long-lost mother, Janet van Dyne, in the aforementioned Ant-Man And The Wasp sequel. We see them briefly together during the funeral at the end of the film, but hopefully we’ll also get to see the two generations of Wasps together on an adventure soon.

Black Panther

Fans were pretty devastated to see T’Challa a.k.a. Black Panther turn to dust at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but he makes one hell of a triumphant return in Avengers: Endgame, and also has a seriously significant future ahead of him going into Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only is he going to have the opportunity to settle into his role as king of Wakanda (something he didn’t really have the chance to do prior to now), but within that role he’s also going to take on some seriously important diplomatic missions because of the new open border policies he enacted at the end of his first solo movie. It’s exciting stuff, and we can’t wait to see director Ryan Coogler dig into it all with the developing Black Panther 2.

Shuri

Like her brother, Shuri also makes one hell of an entrance in Avengers: Endgame, and will also have a key role to play in the future of the franchise. We know she’s the smartest person on Earth, but before now the benefits of her intelligence were exclusively available to the people of Wakanda. Now that the country has opened its borders, Shuri can start changing lives on a global scale – and it’s incredibly exciting to think about the potential that exists there. Letitia Wright was a wonderful standout in the first Black Panther movie, and we can’t wait to see what’s going to happen with her in the sequel.

Okoye

We didn’t get to see much of it in Avengers: Endgame, but with both Black Panther and Shuri dusted because of the Decimation, Okoye was surely put in a very powerful position in Wakanda during the five years that followed. Now, however, things are back to normal, and she will presumably return to her role as the leader of the Dora Milaje – the group of elite female warriors who are sworn to protect their king with every fiber of their being. The precise significance of that won’t really be known until we get to see Black Panther 2, but with Wakanda opening itself up to the world, and T’Challa becoming a figure on the global stage, her job will likely be more important than ever.

Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel has been away from Earth for a long time, but in the last few years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon she has made vital appearances when needed. First she showed up to join the Avengers in killing post-snap Thanos, and then she appeared to destroy Sanctuary II single-handedly during Avengers: Endgame’s final battle. She stayed long enough on the planet to go to the funeral at the end of the movie, but what’s not known right now is if she’ll actually stick around. She is a character who has responsibilities both on Terra and in the cosmos, so we’ll just have to wait and see what kind of adventure Captain Marvel 2 has in store for her.

Doctor Strange

In Avengers: Infinity War, Dr. Stephen Strange made what appeared to be a terrible trade when he gave up the Time Stone in exchange for the life of Tony Stark, but in Avengers: Endgame we finally learned why it was necessary: there was only one path to victory against Thanos, and it was a path that required Tony to sacrifice himself. While it was clearly the right thing to do, that knowledge may still weigh on him for some time to come, and we may see it reflected in his personality and character when we get to see the upcoming Doctor Strange 2. And, of course, being potentially the most powerful sorcerer on Earth, he will continue to have some major responsibilities protecting the planet from fantastical threats.

Wong

In the years following The Decimation, Wong likely had to take on a very important role by becoming the guardian of the New York Sanctum Sanctorum. Of course, he was also very ready to be called into action when the Hulk snap brought him back, and he was one of the key sorcerers battling Thanos during Avengers: Endgame’s massive third act fight. We expect that the next time we see him will be in Doctor Strange 2, and it’s probably fair to assume that he’ll be a key source of support for Doctor Strange in his battle against Karl Mordo (whose villainous turn was teased at the end of the first solo feature).

Valkyrie

As mentioned earlier, Thor will no longer be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s king of Asgard (now located in Tønsberg, Norway), but he didn’t leave the post without finding a proper replacement. That job and all of the responsibility that comes with it now belongs to Valkyrie, who accepts the crown at the end of Avengers: Endgame before the God of Thunder heads off with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Right now there isn’t officially a Thor 4 in the works, so we can’t say for certain when we’ll next see the character, but it seems totally unlikely that we’ve seen the last of her (and her kickass Pegasus).

Korg

Thor fell into a terrible depression following the events of Avengers: Infinity War and the titular team’s first major loss, but part of the reason he was able to get through it is because he had the support of some close friends. Korg, who met the God of Thunder during the events of Thor: Ragnarok did what he could to try and keep his Asgardian pal in a somewhat stable mental state… albeit while arguably enabling some bad habits. We didn’t see him leave with Thor at the end of Avengers: Endgame, so he’s probably still hanging out in New Asgard – but that probably just means that he’ll now have the chance to become Valkyrie’s best friend.

Miek

Of course, Korg wasn’t alone in his efforts being emotional support for Thor, as he also had the assistance of his buddy Miek from Sakaar. Once feared to be dead due to an accidental squishing, Miek managed to escape the Sanctuary II attack on the Asgardian escape vessel – along with Valkyrie and Korg – at the start of Avengers: Infinity War, and has spent the last few years of his life living in New Asgard. While we don’t actually see him at the end of Avengers: Endgame, he is presumably still there when Thor takes off into space with the Guardians, so we’ll just have to wait and see what his next adventure is.

Star-Lord

Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord may have royally screwed up during the battle against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, but hopefully fans will be able to forgive him as he moves into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, post-dusting he did help out in a big way during the big battle in Avengers: Endgame, so at the end of the day one could argue that his slate is clean. He’s now back together with his family, best known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, though he is in an interesting position now given that Thor is a new member of his crew. Will he be able to keep the respect of his cohorts now the venerable God of Thunder is on board? Time will tell.

Gamora

Interestingly, Gamora isn’t really the Gamora we know by the time Avengers: Endgame comes to a close. The original Gamora died similarly to Black Widow on Vormir, and the one that currently exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is from an alternate timeline. That’s a big deal, because not only is she nine years younger than she otherwise would have been, but doesn’t have the same kind of relationship with the Guardians of the Galaxy that was established over many years. That being said, her family – and particularly Peter Quill – certainly wants her back, and that will almost certainly have a significant impact on the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Drax

In Avengers: Endgame, Drax sadly didn’t get to accomplish his mission of vengeance and kill Thanos, but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t still get a happy ending. Following the final battle, he is back together with the Guardians (most of whom, like him, existed as dust particles for five years), and he seems to still be his fun-loving self. As mentioned earlier, there will perhaps be a question of where his loyalties lie in the future, as he is most definitely an admirer of Thor, but what’s important above all is that he’s happy and healthy.

Rocket

Rocket has actually changed a lot as a character over the years, as he no longer seems to be the asshole intent on pushing away everyone who cares about him. Even when he lost his entire Guardians family he still remained a team player, helping the Avengers maintain order the best that they could following The Decimation. That being said, one has to wonder what he will be like going forward, specifically going into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Clearly he still has some of his trademark edge/cynicism, but he may wind up being so happy that he has his friends back that he actually treats them a bit nicer than before (though that’s admittedly a pretty low bar).

Groot

Because of his temporary status as dust, Groot missed out on some important development time during the five years he was gone, so he still has a lot of growing to do. He’s no longer a baby, but he does remain an adolescent and still has a few stages to go through before becoming a full-fledged adult. Right now we can’t say how old he will be when we catch up with him again in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but hopefully James Gunn has some fun stuff planned with the character (especially within his relationship with a much more mature Rocket).

Nebula

Few characters in pop culture history can say that they shot and killed themselves, and then lived to tell the tale, but that’s the current story of Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She has probably undergone a bigger emotional change than any other member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and it will be interesting to see how that continues when we see her next. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame she is presumably exploring the cosmos with her sister, Gamora, and at some point she’ll have to deal with Peter Quill & Co., as they will presumably want the two of them to join them once again on their misadventures.

Mantis

Like the other Guardians with the exception of Rocket, Mantis was turned to dust following what went down in Avengers: Infinity War, but now she’s back, and having helped save the universe once again she is ready for more cosmic quests. Past her introduction to the Guardians of the Galaxy in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we weirdly haven’t seen much of how she generally works alongside the rest of the team, so that will certainly be an interesting aspect of the character to explore going forward. One thing is for certain: she definitely seems to be a big fan of Thor.

Nick Fury

Nick Fury had a very small part to play in Avengers: Endgame, making a dialogue-less appearance during the funeral at the end, but there’s a very good chance that he will be quite active going forward into the future of the franchise. Not only do we know for a fact that he will be playing a significant role in Spider-Man: Far From Home, but it’s worth noting that we haven’t yet seen his very special reunion with Carol Danvers. Could he play as big a role in Captain Marvel 2 as he did in the first solo movie? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Maria Hill

Like Nick Fury, Maria Hill didn’t exactly have a huge impact on Avengers: Endgame, and didn’t give us a proper sense of where she is emotionally following her resurrection – but it won’t be long until we find out. She may have left S.H.I.E.L.D. years ago (taking a job at Stark Industries after the Hydra takeover), but she is still working alongside the former director, and will next be seen kicking ass and taking names in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Pepper Potts

Pepper Potts dedicated many years of her life to her relationship with Tony Stark, starting as his assistant before eventually becoming his wife and the mother of his only daughter, but that era of her life is now over following his sacrifice at the end of Avengers: Endgame. With that in mind, it’s unknown exactly what the future will hold for her. She has her own specially-designed Iron Man suit, which she utilized quite well during the battle against Thanos, but now that she’s a single parent she may not necessarily pursue the superhero life, and instead may just continue running one of the biggest companies in the world.

Deadpool Is Already Featured On Disney’s Website

Deadpool Is Already Featured On Disney’s Website
Walt Disney Company website banner

It's far too early for us to see a lot of changes in the Walt Disney Company now that the merger with Fox is complete, it's not even lunchtime in Burbank yet. However, one place that has already seen a significant change now that the merger is finally done is the Walt Disney Company website. The company's homepage now has a brand new banner which, in addition to giving us expected character from the likes of Star Wars and Pixar, now includes images of Deadpool, The Simpsons, and Avatar among others. Check it out.

Of the 14 images that make up the new homepage banner, fully half of them are new to The Walt Disney Company as of this morning. The Shape of Water was a former Best Picture winner distributed by Fox Searchlight. While Disney had previously made a deal with James Cameron to include the world of Avatar in the company's theme parks, they only own the rights to the films as of now. The Simpsons come courtesy of 20th Century Fox Television.

The little monkey is likely a reference to the National Geographic cable channel that is now part of Disney. The cricket player is probably there because Disney now owns Star India, a conglomerate of Indian cable channels that spotlight the popular sport. Then you have Deadpool representing 20th Century Fox's film arm, and Donald Glover, who's show Atlanta is a hit on the FX cable channel.

While the website change doesn't necessarily mean anything on its own, it would certainly seem to be an indication of what Disney finds most important of its new acquisitions. There'd be no interest in drawing attention to Deadpool if there were no plans to make new movies under the Disney regime. We know that Avatar is going to continue forward with new films, a couple of them are in production right now, and The Simpsons is showing no sign of ever stopping. It may make new episodes until the heat death of the universe.

National Geographic content is going to be quite important to Disney going forward. The cable channel's library is set to be a major pillar of the content available when Disney+ launches later this year.

Seeing all these popular characters, from Deadpool to Elsa to Bart Simpson, on the same homepage is almost surreal. All of these popular characters now exist in one place. If nothing else, it opens up near endless possibilities for Disney's theme park business. The number of new attractions that could be created to sit alongside the existing ones seems almost limitless.

Over the next several months and years we'll begin to see how this massive pop culture juggernaut actually moves forward with all these properties, but the work has already begun.

Upcoming Live-Action Disney Movies: Remakes From Aladdin To Cruella

Upcoming Live-Action Disney Movies: Remakes From Aladdin To Cruella
Aladdin

Disney made its name producing animated features based on classic fairy tales. Today the company is making a killing with new live-action versions of its original classic stories. After producing more than 50 animated feature films, the studio certainly has plenty of material to draw from. In fact, there are a lot of potential live-action films in various stages of production based on previous Disney content. Not everything is based on animation, but each one is a return to a classic story from the history of Disney.

Some of these films are confirmed with release dates, while others have only been reported to be in development and may never see the light of day, but between theatrical releases and the upcoming Disney+ streaming service, there's a good chance we'll see many of these projects eventually. Here's a look at every single one of them you should be looking out for.

Aladdin

Release Date: May 24, 2019

As strange as a Tim Burton-directed Dumbo movie sounded, a Guy Ritchie-directed Disney musical sounds even odder, though that's what we're going to get. Ritchie directing Aladdin in what will be a musical that will follow in the footsteps of Beauty and the Beast. Will Smith will step into the shoes of Robin Williams and play Genie while relative newcomer Mena Massoud will take on the title role and Naomi Scott will play Jasmine. While we expect most of the classic songs from the animated original to return, the movie will also include new music from the pair behind La La Land and The Greatest Showman.

The Lion King

Release Date: July 19, 2019

Shortly after Jon Favreau's Jungle Book became a hit, a sequel was greenlit. Shortly after that, The Lion King was announced. We're guessing that the Academy Award-winning effects of Jungle Book proved to Disney that CGI animals were realistic enough to carry a movie, meaning the studio was now willing to risk their crown jewel of the entire animation catalog. The Lion King is still one of Disney's most successful animated films ever, and a bad remake could spell disaster, but a GOOD one could be one of the biggest movies ever made. The cast includes the likes of Donald Glover as Simba, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, and a returning James Earl Jones as Mufasa, because literally nobody could do it better.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Release Date: October 18, 2019

Maleficent was a huge box office success and so following that with a sequel was a likely bet. Angelina Jolie reportedly signed to make a sequel some time ago, but apparently without a specific plan, as the project then when quiet for years. However, once that changed, everything moved into high gear. Once it was confirmed that Maleficent 2 was, in fact, happening, the movie went right into production and recently wrapped principal photography. Joachim Rønning, the director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales took on the directorial duties. Originally set for an early 2020 release, the movie was then bumped up and will open in the fall of 2019.

Lady and the Tramp

Release Date: November 12, 2019

Possibly one of the more surprising additions to this list is Lady and the Tramp. Most of the film's major roles, both human and animal have been cast, including Justin Theroux as the Tramp and Tessa Thompson as Lady. What makes this movie unique is that you won't be able to see it at your local cineplex, the plan is for the film to debut on Disney's upcoming streaming service, Disney+. The service will be available beginning November 12 2019 and Lady and the Tramp has been confirmed to be a day one release.

Mulan

Release Deate: March 27, 2020

While Mulan was announced before many of the projects on this list, some difficulties finding a director caused the production to be delayed. Originally scheduled for November 2018, the movie is now set for March of 2020. Whale Rider director Niki Caro is on board to direct the entirely Asian cast including Yifei Liu as Mulan. While the Disney animated movie dealt with an attack by a Hun army, casting has revealed a very different group of villains, with Gong Li being brought in to play a witch character as the main antagonist, a very different direction for the live-action version is expected.

Cruella

Release Date: December 23, 2020

Disney started the live-action remake train by taking a different perspective on a classic Disney villain. Maleficent was a huge hit and odds are that's the sort of success the studio will be looking for with Cruella. The film will stand as an apparent prequel to 101 Dalmatians and introduce the character of Cruella de Vile. Emma Stone is on board to star, and while we heard little more than rumors about this project for the last few years, the film now has an official release date, so it will likely be going into production soon.

The Sword in the Stone

A remake of The Sword in the Stone is another Disney project that was announced, with Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman on board to pen the script, and then it seemed to fade away. Then it was announced that 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo would direct the project and that it, like Lady and Tramp, would be a project for the new Disney streaming service rather than theatrical release. Things have gone quiet again since then, but considering the number of projects Disney is working on to bolster its upcoming service, it seems like it's only a matter of time before this one goes into production as well.

The Little Mermaid

With plans to make adaptations of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, it's not shocking that The Little Mermaid was added to the list as it was the film that kicked down the door for Disney's resurgence in animation 30 years ago. If there's a single thing pointing toward this project making it to the screen, it's the fact that the hottest name in music, Lin-Manuel Miranda, is attached to work on the film's songs along with Disney mainstay Alan Menken. Miranda loves the film so much that he named his son Sebastian. This one will be a labor of love for the man behind Hamilton. Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall is reportedly on board to direct this film as well, and rumors have linked Zendaya with the lead role but nothing has been confirmed. Miranda posted an image of himself composer Alan Menken that included some Little Mermaid song lyrics in April of 2019, seemingly indicting this one is very much still active.

The Jungle Book 2

The original animated version of The Jungle Book had a fairly definitive ending, and even that didn't prevent a sequel from being made. The live-action version left itself open for sequels, and after the box office that it obtained, you can be sure that sequels there will be. With director Jon Favreau busy with The Lion King, Jungle Book 2 will be waiting until at least after that movie has been completed to really get moving. Screenwriter Justin Marks has indicated the story of the sequel may include ideas that were conceived for the original animated movie that never made it into the final product.

Prince Charming

This one is something of a wild card in the Disney schedule. The original script wasn't commissioned by Disney, meaning that it wasn't specifically written with any of the studio's trademark style. However, since then the project has brought on Beauty and the Beast writer Stephen Chbosky who is apparently working on a script that would focus on Prince Charming's brother. Chbosky has likened his take to The Princess Bride , which is certainly something most of us can probably get behind. This one feels like it may end up on the streaming service as well, though nothing has been officially announced.

Tink

Reese Witherspoon was reportedly on board a live action movie focused on Peter Pan's sidekick Tinkerbell some time ago  although, like several of these ideas, the movie hasn't gone anywhere recently. Tinkerbell has actually become one of Disney's most popular characters in recent years thanks to a series of home entertainment released films, so there's a good chance that this one will come together eventually as the character certainly has a lot of fans. Still, this one has been quiet for a long time, so it's possible this project may need a lot of clapping to bring it back to life.

Night on Bald Mountain

Disney's Fantasia contained animated shorts combined with classical music. One of the most memorable sequences was the animation that accompanied Modest Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain." Now, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless who co-wrote the scripts for Dracula Untold and The Last Witch Hunter together are reportedly working on a script that would turn the winged demon from that brief animation into the focus of a full-length motion picture. The lack of any serious narrative in the animated short would give the screenwriters the freedom to create almost anything, which could be good, or could be bad.

Pinocchio

The tale of the wooden boy who wants to be a real one was Disney's second animated feature and the Oscar-winning "When You Wish Upon a Star" has become the unofficial theme song for the entire company. Seeing a live-action version of this story was only a matter of time. The original feature wasn't without its opportunities for action or even horror, which means this could get a truly exciting remake. We're sure we'd get a CGI Jiminy Cricket out of this one. The only question is whether our title character is an actual boy or a computer-generated one, in order to make sequences like donkey transformation easier. Sam Mendes was in talks to direct the film at one point but he eventually left the project. Next, Paddington director Paul King was attached, but then he pulled out as well. It seems this project is now on hold, so it could be some time before we see it, if ever.

Rose Red

Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves has become such an iconic film that for many it is the ultimate version of the fairy tale. However, the movie has become so well known that most probably don't even know that in the original version of the story, Snow White had a sister, Rose Red. There are plans to rectify that however with a movie that would focus on the character in a story that would pick up after Snow White fell asleep and followed her as she tried to find a way to wake up her sister. While no actresses are attached to play the leading role, one rumor indicated Brie Larson could play Snow White in the film

Peter Pan

Pete's Dragon wasn't a huge Disney success but it was no slouch either. The team behind that film has now been tasked with working on a live-action version of Peter Pan. It's not clear if this film will be in any way connected to the Tinkerbell movie that Disney is also working on. Live action Peter Pan movies have been less than successful in recent years, though perhaps the reason is that they haven't had the Disney name. We'll be waiting to see if this one will have the spark that previous live-action versions have been missing.

Snow White

Snow White set the tone for all the animated Disney films to follow. Now it will follow other successful adaptations into the live-action world. The film will be a full musical with new songs created by the songwriters behind La La Land. As with Peter Pan and Tink, Snow White has a related project with Rose Red. It's not clear if this film will be in the same universe as that one. This is another remake that seemingly hasn't had much movement recently, so it's unclear if it's still in active development or if it's been put on the shelf to make room for everything else.

Previously Released

Mary Poppins Returns

While it's not based on an animated film, or technically a remake (it's a sequel), Mary Poppins is as much a part of Disney history as anything that's been drawn. The story will return at Christmas of 2018 when Emily Blunt takes over the role that won Julie Andrews an Academy Award. With Lin-Manuel Miranda along for the ride, we're really excited to see how the practically perfect governess will come back to the big screen. This film will take its inspiration from other books written by P.L. Travers. And there are plenty more where those came from if this one is a hit. The first trailer was recently released, and, man, does this one look good.

Dumbo

Tim Burton got his start working for Disney, and the eclectic director has come back now and again, usually to put together stop-motion animation films. Considering the lead character of Dumbo is an elephant, Burton is trading in the stop-motion animation for CGI in the vein of The Jungle Book, but the one teaser that has been released doesn't show us a lot of how Dumbo will be brought to life. Colin Ferrell will play the lead human character, one that was not in the animated original, showing that this version of Dumbo will clearly diverge from the animated original.

Rocketman’s Richard Madden Doesn’t Agree With Editing Out Gay Sex Scenes

Rocketman’s Richard Madden Doesn’t Agree With Editing Out Gay Sex Scenes
Taron Egerton and Richard Madden as Elton John and John Reid in Rocketman

It’s not often that two music icons who rose to fame in the same era and have inspiring stories to tell get their turn at a big screen moment. Then there is Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman. The two biopics have the common thread of having Dexter Fletcher behind the camera at one point or another, though they take two different stances on the stars’ sexual identities.

Bohemian Rhapsody was a massive success that both garnered awards attention and earned over $900 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing music biopic of all time. However, some had one gripe with the Queen celebration: how it censored and “straight-washed” Freddie Mercury’s sexual identity. The producers chalked the choices up to intending to tell the story to a wider audience.

As Hollywood passes the microphone over to the tale of Elton John in Rocketman, the movie has taken an an R-rated approach that doesn’t shy away from gay sex scenes and the musician’s past drug use, including the movie being framed around his stint in rehab. However, rumors had emerged prior about the studio’s intention to cut a nude scene between Taron Egerton’s John and Richard Madden’s John Reid.

Director Dexter Fletcher shot down the whispers, confirming that the movie would be loud and proud about all aspects of Elton John’s life. Now, Richard Madden is also speaking out about the importance that all aspects of his life be seen. In his words:

It’s an intimate thing between these two characters and a significant moment in Elton’s life. And Elton’s life was very R-rated, wasn’t it?

Why censor a life as bold as Elton John’s has been? In Richard Madden’s interview with EW, he said it would have been a disservice to the star if the love scenes he shot with Egerton had been cut. John Reid was Elton’s first manager and a lover of his for a time, and is an important part of the film’s story.

If discussions had been made over cutting the nude and gay content in Rocketman, the reason was certainly over the opportunity of reproducing Bohemian Rhapsody. The music biopic’s box office success could have certainly benefited from a PG-13 rating, but when you think about it, most Queen fans are over 18 years old, and the same goes for those of Elton John. Considering the target audience is mature enough to see an R-rated film, why not go that extra mile to do these legends justice - and the LGBT community they represent.

Rocketman has a bit of a disadvantage to Bohemian Rhapsody because it’s opening right as the summer movie season kicks off, while the Queen film had less competition to go in with. The upcoming fantasy musical will debut at $20 to $25 million behind with Godzilla: King of Monsters this Friday, tracking at $50 million. Rocketman has impressed critics so far, who seem to like it better than Bohemian Rhapsody overall.
